I’m 48 and my IRA is worth $103k. I make a salary of $85k, my husband is self employed–income is about $50k. (We often make contributions to his SEP IRA to limit tax liability.) I need to pay off credit card debt (about $25k) and I am aware it’s a last resort. I basically have thought this through and once I pay off the debt I will have a better credit score (it averages–635-due to credit line % usage.) Once I pay off the debt I will have about $1500 a month freed up and can also max out my 401k contribution through my employer. I also have a daughter going to college next year and would like to have the cash flow to pay for books/fees not covered by GA HOPE’s scholarship program to minimize borrowing. I’ve tried getting a loan through my credit union to consolidate the debt, but due to my credit score and credit usage, I was not approved.
