Contents of your home may be covered under your HO policy, but don't take it for granted. Here are a few tips:
1. Have a log of your personal property (description, serial number, make/model) and if possible a photograph and any other evidence of ownership. Keep it in your lockbox at the bank, at your office, or save a copy to the cloud. And of course, don't store it on the laptop's harddrive.
2. Remember that your HO policy may require you satisfy a deductible before the coverage covers against a loss. If you have a $1000 deductible but your laptop is only $600, you'll be covering the $600 replacement out of pocket if that is your only claim.
3. Call your insurance provider, reference your policy number, and ASK. You should also iqnuire where to locate written verification of the representative's response (this information should be covered in your policy information).
Some HO policies require a separate rider to cover specific items in the home. Your HO policy representative should be your primary and a helpful resource.
