Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) and the ridesharing service Uber have teamed up to provide customers with a stellar new opportunity to earn rewards.
Like peanut butter and jelly, we think SPG and Uber go better together. Here’s everything you need to know about the partnership:
Starwood Preferred Guest and Uber: The basics
The partnership between SPG and Uber allows you to score Starpoints with every Uber ride you take. And if you use the ridesharing service while you’re staying at an SPG property, you’ll earn even more Starpoints.
Here’s how Starpoints earn rates on Uber rides break down, according to the SPG website:
- Everyday rate: 1 Starpoint per $2 spent with Uber.
- Rate during stays at SPG properties: 2 Starpoints per $1 spent with Uber.
You must have one qualifying SPG stay each calendar year to earn Starpoints with Uber. And there’s an annual limit to the Starpoints you can earn this way. Once you hit $10,000 in Uber spending, you won’t be eligible to score Starpoints with your rides until the next calendar year.
The Nerds value Starpoints at 2.3 cents apiece when redeemed for hotel stays, so this is an impressive return on your Uber spending.
You’ll need to take two important steps to start racking up Starpoints with Uber:
- Log in to your SPG account and link it to your Uber account.
- Book (and follow through with) one qualifying stay at an SPG hotel this calendar year.
And with that, you’ll be scoring extra Starpoints with every ride you take.
If you’re looking to really pump up your Starpoints earning power, consider getting the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express. With it, you’ll earn up to 5 Starpoints per dollar spent at Starwood properties (depending on your status in the SPG program), 2 Starpoints per dollar at Marriott Rewards properties, and 1 Starpoint per dollar spent elsewhere.
Plus, the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express comes with a sign-up bonus: Earn 75,000 Bonus Points after you use your new Card to make $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months. Terms Apply. (The annual fee is $0 for the first year, then $95.)
The great news is that the Starpoints you earn with Uber are stackable with the Starpoints you earn with the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express. If you use the card as your payment method with Uber, you’ll earn a minimum of 2 Starpoints per dollar spent on your rides. Again, given the high value of Starpoints, this is something to sing about.
And don’t forget, Starpoints can be used for more than just hotel stays. Although you’ll likely get the best value per point by redeeming at Starwood properties, you can also cash them in for “Nights and Flights” or transfer them to one of over two dozen participating frequent flyer programs.
This type of flexibility is something most frequent travelers crave, and that’s why SPG is one of our favorite loyalty programs.
Should you take advantage of this partnership?
In a word: Yes! Starwood Preferred Guest members who are also loyal Uber customers stand to gain big rewards from this dynamic duo. It’s so good that if you’re an SPG member who’s never used Uber (or vice versa), it might be time to give it a whirl.
