Comparing the largest auto insurance companies

Size isn’t the only reason to choose an auto insurance company. In ranking the best car insurance companies, cheatgame.info also examines customer service and claims satisfaction scores from J.D. Power and Consumer Reports, along with complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Here’s how the largest auto insurance companies stack up in cheatgame.info’s ranking of 24 insurers. USAA isn’t eligible for ranking because it is available only to military members, veterans and their families.

Although Nationwide scored highest among the 10 largest companies, it ranked eighth out of 24 in cheatgame.info’s overall analysis — which means the top seven spots went to smaller insurers.

Finding the best insurance company for you

When shopping for a policy, it’s smart to consider a wide range of choices, from the nation’s largest auto insurance companies to smaller, regional insurers that may be a great fit for you. Take a look at the big picture of customer satisfaction, claims service and price. cheatgame.info’s car insurance comparison tool can help you compare rates.

J.D. Power ratings for claims satisfaction are from the J.D. Power 2018 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study. J.D. Power ratings for shopping satisfaction are from the J.D. Power 2018 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study.

Complaints as reported to the NAIC are from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, which collects complaint data on insurers from the states and compares a company’s complaints with other insurers that are about the same size.

To provide average sample rates for the 10 largest auto insurance companies:
cheatgame.info averaged rates for 40-year-old men and women for 20 ZIP codes in each state and Washington, D.C., from the largest insurers, up to 12 in each state. “Good drivers” had no moving violations on record and credit in the “good” tier as reported to each insurer. Sample drivers had the following coverage limits:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability coverage per person.
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability coverage per crash.
  • $50,000 property damage liability coverage per crash.
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage per person.
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage per crash.
  • Collision coverage with $1,000 deductible.
  • Comprehensive coverage with $1,000 deductible.

In states where required, minimum additional coverages were added. We used a 2015 Toyota Camry in all cases. These are sample rates generated through Quadrant Information Services. Your own rates will be different.

To rank the best auto insurance companies:
cheatgame.info’s star ratings are based on the following three factors, each weighted equally to produce a 300-point maximum total score:

  • 2017 consumer complaints data from the NAIC. The median complaint ratio for the industry is 1. Lower ratios are better. Insurers whose median complaint ratios were more than 1 received fewer points; those lower than 1 received more points.
  • 2017 company satisfaction data from the Consumer Reports Winter Survey. Higher satisfaction ratings from Consumer Reports were given higher scores in our calculation.
  • 2017 J.D. Power ratings from three studies encompassing regional customer service satisfaction, auto claims satisfaction and shopping satisfaction. Ratings from each of the separate 2017 studies were averaged to form one overall score from J.D. Power. The higher the average, the more points the insurer scored in our calculation.

Only larger insurers with data available in all three of these categories were included. Smaller insurers not listed here may also be good choices and are worth consideration.
