More trouble than it's worth
Every step of the process for opening up an account was cumbersome. For an online bank they require a lot of paperwork through snail mail. I understand some snail mail, but it started getting painful. I have also found that I needed to call them for several issues. Hold time ranged from 15 to 45 minutes. I'm not thrilled about wasting this much time trying to get a bank set up. The final straw for me was trying to set up electronic bill pay, it's one of the free feature they advertise. When trying to set up new payees I continued to get error messages. I went through their online help and also searched the internet to see why it wasn't working. I called customer service and was told that Bill Pay was scheduled for maintenance earlier in the day and it must have run longer than expected. This was 11 hours past the projected time. I was told to try again the following day. The next day I tried again and received the same error, so I called. We went through some basic trouble shooting to no avail. I was told a tech support person would call me back. After two hours I tried again and after 30 minutes got to Ally's tech support. We did more troubleshooting. I was finally told that this was a known issue and they would open a trouble ticket for me. I asked how long it had been "known" and being worked on. The answer was it's been an issue for months. I said don't bother opening a trouble ticket I'll find a new bank. What a huge waste of time and energy. Ally is horrible.

Incompetent, expensive
Ended up with Ally when purchasing a car through dealership. The interest rate offered was 6.5% at 780 credit score. I refinanced within one month through local credit union for 3.8%. A few months later I ed Ally to send me a proof of loan paid off. It took me 3 phone calls to customer service because the first two did not process my request, instead they simply lied and pretended to. The reason why I know this was because the third phone call asked for more detail information and gave me a conformation number. Definitely an example why you should not bank online.
