It’s no secret that big banks sometimes charge high fees and offer low interest rates. U.S. Bank, the country’s fifth-largest by assets, is no exception. But what this institution does well is provide convenient access to thousands of physical branches and ATMs.

Checking

3.5

U.S. Bank offers seven types of checking accounts, from a basic account to options for students and people who exclusively use debit cards instead of checks, as well as an interest-bearing account for seniors. There are also silver and gold packages designed for those who have other accounts at the bank, and an additional interest-earning account.

The basic account is Easy Checking. It has a monthly fee of $8.95, or $6.95 if you opt for online statements. To get the charge waived, make monthly direct deposits of at least $1,000 total or maintain an average account balance of $1,500.

U.S. Bank offers free access to more than 4,700 U.S. Bank ATMs nationwide. But if you go outside of the network, the bank charges a $2.50 transaction fee, in addition to whatever the ATM’s owner may charge (unless it’s a MoneyPass ATM, in which case there’s no surcharge from the ATM operator).

Customer service is horrible.
I have been with this bank for 10 years. I started using their online banking option. Do not trust it! It is not accurate. I foolishly made a purchase based off the amount shown in my online banking. It was not accurate and now I am stuck with paying their overdraft fees which are robberty to begin with. And when I called in they just kept repeating...there is nothing we can do for you. Horrible customer service!! I will be leaving ASAP!

totally greed-driven & clueless customer"service"
as background: I have a Finance BBA & an MBA & worked 25+ years as a personal & small business financial advisor. Served on 1 credit union BofDir & as Chairperson of Supervisory Comm of another, all at NO COST. 1st USBank account i had with them was OK. average. the usual. closed when i moved. tried them a 2nd time in new location = absolutely outrageous lack of care & knowledge. their"many locations" include mini branches & ATM's in grocery stores = borderline useless. they seem to use these as "training grounds" for "managers". my troubles started when i was erroneously garnished by CA tax thieves, without notice. USBank made No effort whatsoever to warn me & gleefully took the money out of my checking acct. this in turned caused several checks to bounce & they gleefully charged me insuffient fund charges, but also overdraft protection fees for "protection"that interestly did NOT cover the checks. as soon as i got wind of garnishment, i went to grocery branch & made a deposit to cover it & checks. but since they continued pile on fees upon fees, it + a 2nd deposit weren't enough to cover them all. USBank of course, used my deposits to pay their fees instead of honoring my checks & auto-payments! after several weeks of this & numerous calls to branch"managers" i refused to pay anything more than what they paid as overdraft protection outof their money. fair enuf. "manager" agreed & i paid. next time i went online, they were STILL loading on fee upon fee! called "branch"; "Oh we're sorry, she doesn't work here anymore." new "manager" hadn't a clue & said i had to pay up EVERYTHING. by now, i'd stopped putting any money into ripoff outfit & tried to close the account. "Can't close until everything is paid in full." told them where to shove their entire "rules of ripoff". they set their collection dogs on me. they refused to listen to my version of the TRUTH. i went on with my life & battling the tax thieves (i finally won!). relocated to NV. when i tried to open an account at a credit union i was refused because USBank had put me on the "bankers' blackball list"!?!? 9 years later, i'm still on the list. BEWARE these SLIMEBALLS. Use credit unions or community banks, NOT these heartless, souless, greed-monger banksters!!
