Overall

4.0

London-based Barclays provides services to 48 million people worldwide. Its U.S. banking operation, which is only online, offers excellent annual percentage yields on savings accounts and certificates of deposit — but it doesn’t offer a checking account.

Barclays also lacks a branch network, so it’s best suited for consumers who prefer a hands-off approach to saving money. But if you value high savings rates, you might be able to overlook these limitations.

Savings

5.0

With low fees and some of the highest interest rates around, Barclays is the bank to boost your savings. The Online Savings account pays 2.05% APY and has a tool for setting savings goals. There are no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements.

Most banks charge $30 or more for overdraft fees, but Barclays has only a $5 nonsufficient funds fee, charged if an online transfer would overdraw your account.

IDENTITY THEFT WARNING
Stay away! Barclay's is one of the worst banks out there (along with HSBC and BOA). They will actually you every 6 months to a year and threaten to freeze your account if you don't re-disclose your information. They force you to risk your identity by re-providing personal and financial information in an non-secure manner. They do this to ALL their customers and falsely claim it is required under the patriot act even though no other banks does this. When confronted about it they were arrogant and their supervisors refuse to provide the information necessary to file a complaint about his actions to his boss. Believe me it is not worth it to deal with these horrible people, they are not good people and I have just read articles on how they are a "dirty bank" and funding/considering funding some very bad things as well as hunting and stalking people that report them for violations. They don't even care that these reviews are being posted, the supervisor was told this was forthcoming and still decided to withhold the information necessary to report his actions to his supervisor. It is ironic that they want you to disclose your information over and over again, yet they will refuse to disclose their information in the same conversation. Stay away!

DO NOT USE!!
TERRIBLE customer service. They blocked my account and would only release it if I MAILED my SSN, picture ID, and proof of address. Refused to accept information if it was submitted electronically or in person at the branch. Absolutely useless customer care representatives, who talk from a script and unable to use common sense. If you want a bank stuck in the stone age and enjoy wasting your time on hold, then by all means open an account with Barclays
